Record-breaking ride launches for 2017!
Northamptonshire’s favourite sponsored cycle ride has done it again – raising a remarkable record-breaking total of more than £76,000 for Cynthia Spencer Hospice!
The amazing sum, contributed by the 1100 riders who took part in Cycle4Cynthia last September, was revealed at the launch of the 2017 ride at Franklin’s Gardens last night (4th April) while it was also announced that this year’s event would take place at Lamport Hall on Sunday 24th September.
In addition, the launch saw the presentation of the 2016 trophies, including for most money raised by an individual, which went to Rob Howard for collecting over £1600, to the biggest team, won for the second year by the Melbourne Arms in Duston, and to the best fancy dress, which, following a vote on Facebook, saw Darcey Collett and Verity Linnell pick up the trophy after pedalling on a tandem dressed as daffodils!
Meanwhile the Chairman’s Cup, awarded in recognition of a special effort representing the ‘spirit of the ride’, went to Paul Lambert, Jack Fleckney and Ed Robinson from Crossfit East Northants who not only cycled the 50 miles on their mini BMXs but also performed ‘burpees’ at the end of every mile!
The trophies were presented by Saints coach Jim Mallinder and player Christian Day while they were joined by George North and his partner, double Olympic silver-medal cyclist Becky James, the Mayor of Northampton, Christopher Malpas, and the Hospice’s mascot, Spencer, for the celebratory photos!
Among those at the event was David Solomon from Northampton who is receiving treatment for Motor Neurone Disease at the Hospice. Speaking to the audience on his behalf, his wife Paula talked of the amazing support that they and the family are given and urged everyone to sign up for this year’s ride: “The whole team at Cynthia Spencer are just incredible and I don’t know where we would be without them” explained Paula.
“We only have to ask for something, perhaps for a new piece of equipment to help David maintain his independence, and it gets sorted straightaway.
“The ride itself is such a great day and you get to meet some wonderful people, as well as knowing that you’re supporting such a great cause, so I’d encourage everyone to dig out their bikes and join the fun!” she enthused.
Cycle4Cynthia 2017 will take place on Sunday 24th September at Lamport Hall with 5, 25 and 50 mile routes on offer.
